Anne-Marie Hirmer is a textile designer, researcher, and textile engineer whose work explores the potential of knitted textiles beyond conventional applications. By transforming knitted structures into active material systems, she investigates how textiles can shape interactions between body, space, and object.
She holds a Master of Arts in Textile and Material Design from the weißensee academy of art berlin and a Bachelor of Engineering in Textile and Clothing Technology from Albstadt-Sigmaringen University. Combining design, material research, and engineering expertise, her practice bridges conceptual exploration and technical implementation.
With more than ten years of international experience in the textile and apparel industry, including roles at adidas, her work is informed by a strong background in high-performance product development. Today, she applies this expertise across disciplines, working in fields such as automotive interiors, spatial design, and art.

A distinctive aspect of her practice is the seamless integration of design and technical implementation. She develops textile systems from concept to production, taking projects through machine programming, prototyping, and material realization herself.
Alongside her research practice at the Materiability Research Group, she teaches at the weißensee academy of art berlin. Her work combines material experimentation, technological innovation, and architectural thinking to expand the possibilities of knitted textiles beyond conventional applications.
