Our Design Through Making process is based on the belief that some things are best understood when personally experiencing them. Especially in regards to new technologies and materials physical exploration leads to immediate insights that otherwise could hardly be grasped. Failure in this regards represents a crucial element of the creative endeavour and is equally valuable as all other parts of the process since it forms a vital basis from which new ideas can evolve and grow. Once the potentials and qualities of an emerging technology or material have been experienced it is much easier to develop design applications and solutions that do justice to its inherent properties. Knowing what a material ‘wants’ and is capable of simplifies prototyping and allows for compelling narrative contexts.

MAKING

Our process usually starts with playful exploration and experimentation. From touching, (dis)assembling, experiencing and observing one can very quickly understand the possibilities and disadvantages of a certain material or technology without wasting time on assumptions or speculations.


IDEATION

From this knowledge it is only a small step to either continue deeper research or use it as a foundation for cross-disciplinary exchange and collaboration. In any case it provides a viable base for the ideation of future concepts and visions that are grounded in possibilities and not solely in expectations.


NARRATIVE

Every product is only as good as the story it communicates. In order to present ideas that are memorable they need to be both emotional and novel. The context and vision of a design solution or experience thus have to be developed with as much care as the actual result.
