Maria Valente

I received her BA(Hons) in Architecture from the University of Manchester in 2009 taking part thereafter in the Year Out placement programme at RHWL Architects in London. During this year, I became involved in the construction of the Jewish Community Secondary School project in North London (completed in August 2010) and other various projects. In addition, I developed with the other two students on the programme, a community regeneration proposal for the Haitian society following the earthquake in January 2010, project entered for the Urban SOS 2010 student competition. From October 2010 to July 2011 I interned at Ateliers Jean Nouvel in Paris and participated in competition projects: Aérogare de Deauville (design of a small scale airport in Normandy), La citadelle d’Amiens (university campus). I then worked as a member of the 3D modelling team within the firm on several projects such as Gare de Midi in Brussels, Palais Royal in Pierrefeu, Hopital Necker in Paris. My architectural studies focused on biomimetic research and on the adaptability of this approach to architecture. Sustainability is a main concern in my architectural thinking and a pivotal point that drives the conceptual process. I have participated in the 2010 AA Biodynamic Structures workshop in San Francisco, where I developed a keen interest on parametric modelling and interactive prototypes fabrication.
